Roscommon Community Tourism Network
Background to the RCTN - Roscommon Community Tourism Network
Roscommon used to be the 'poor relation' when it came to tourism in the West of Ireland. Despite being the county with EVERYTHING on offer (except the sea, we do admit you'll have to go a little further onto Sligo, or Mayo, for the sea), we just weren't getting the visitor numbers we deserved. A few of us who are involved in tourism in the county began to get together for meetings. In response to actions from the Roscommon Tourism Strategy 2010-2014, we attended training, and had lengthy discussions with leading partners, such as the County Council, Fáilte Ireland, the Trade Forum, and the LEADER Partnership, and from all of this the Roscommon Community Tourism Network (RCTN) was founded.
We're a not-for-profit limited company, managed by a voluntary Board of Directors consisting of key stakeholders in Roscommon Tourism at grassroots level. This is a unique approach, as far as we know, in Ireland - to have the people of the communities leading the decision making process for their own county. Of course this doesn't happen in a vacuum, and there is a huge amount of support and co-operation between all tourism partners in Roscommon. Since our launch in April 2010, the board and members of RCTN have been working behind the scenes to actively promote Roscommon in new and enterprising ways.

Let us help you with your content writing and organisation of the perfect words for your website - for example, a piece on the death and burial of the Irish Queen Maeve...
Awww, she's Dead? How?!
In her later years, Maeve often went to bathe in a pool on Inchcleraun (Inis Cloithreann), an island on Lough Ree, near Knockcroghery in County Roscommon. Furbaide, who's mother she had killed, sought revenge, and set about planning her demise. He was quite dedicated about it. But we suppose it's the type of thing that you'd really want to get right.
First, he took a rope and measured the distance between the pool and the shore, and practiced with his sling until he could hit an apple on top of a stake Maeve's height, from that distance. The next time he saw Medb bathing he put his practice to good use and killed her with a piece of cheese. Yes chees. Queen Maeve was killed by cheese. Her son, Maine Athramail (he who was originally Cairbre, and most 'like his mother', ascended to the throne of Connacht in her place.
But buried in Sligo, right?
Well, not exactly. Maybe. 'Maeve's Cairn' in Co. Sligo, is the best known burial site of Queen Maeve, but it is one of three possible sites. According to some legends, she is indeed buried in the 40ft (12m) high stone cairn on the summit of Knocknarea (Cnoc na Rí in Irish, Hill of the King/Queen) in County Sligo. The story goes that she is buried upright, facing her enemies in Ulster.
In Bronze or Iron Age burials though, it would be common enough to hack an important dead person apart and bury bits of them along different boundaries, for protection and guardianship. Another story goes that she is buried in the hill of Knockma (Cnoc Medb in Irish, Hill of Maeve), near Belclare in Co. Galway, which is also where Fionnbharr, King of the Connacht Sidhe, holds court. The Fairy connection is an interesting one, and maybe related to her later associations with Mab, the Fairy Queen? The boundary theory holds here too though, as the views from the top of Knockma are spectacular. Very convenient for a guardianship position, we'd say.
Her home in Rathcroghan, County Roscommon is the third, and most likely burial site, with a long low slab named Misgaun Medb being given as the probable location. In the 'she got chopped up in bitty bits and buried' theory, this is where her soul (most likely to be contained in her head, according to thinking of the time) would be. Or possibly her heart. Whatever was deemed the most important part would have stayed at home, with other bits spreading out at lesser sites along the boundaries.

John first became interested in complementary healing in the early nineties and studied Shiatsu, a Japanese form of healing.
He later went on to complete a course of study in Aromatherapy massage and Sports Massage and holds diplomas in both.
In the mid nineties, John interrupted his studies in complementary medicine, to work as an aid worker for the Irish Red Cross, in refugee camps in Burundi and Rwanda, and later went on to work in Kyrgystan in Central Asia, developing the state hospital system.
On his return to Ireland, John felt drawn to the spiritual aspects of healing and completed his studies in Reiki healing, becoming a Reiki master. John has always loved animals, and has studied animal healing . He is currently studying Shamanism and Tantra with John Hawken, in Cornwall, England. Member of the Irish Massage Therapists Association.
John was an Officer in the Irish Defence Forces, and saw service as a United Nations peacekeeper in many world trouble spots.

What draws a respected military man, an accomplished officer in the Irish Defence Forces, to the world of Spiritual Healing and Complimentary Therapy?
Perhaps his time as a United Nations peace keeper in some of the world’s most unsettled regions have given John Picard his unprecedented insight into how best to soothe your troubled soul. It is certain that his time working with the Irish Red Cross – bringing practical aid to the people of the refugee camps in Burundi and Rwanda, and developing a hospital system in Kyrgystan – has helped to shape this man’s devotion to healing and care.
For more than 15 years, John has applied his innate self-discipline to training and accomplishment in the arts of Shiatsu, Aromatherapy and Sports Massage, Animal Healing, and Reiki. A respected male massage therapist; he is a registered member of the Irish Massage Therapists Association, a recognised Reiki Master, and continues to add to his extensive skill base by studying Shamanism and Tantra with the respected John Hawken.
